Dad Jokes (2025)
- George Tzamaras fancies himself as a “connoisseur of fine dad jokes.” I have him rate a few of my own dad jokes as a rite of passage as I start my journey into fatherhood.
The Effects of Nuclear War (2024)
- In 1979, the US government commissioned a fictional account of the aftermath of nuclear war…set in Charlottesville, Virginia. The report inspired The Day After – one of the most popular made for TV movies of all time.
Mt. Trashmore (2023)
- Mt. Trashmore has the distinction of being the first landfill converted into a park. And for many years, it was a popular spot for locals to hangout in Virginia Beach. Until it exploded on April 1st 1992… Well, not exactly. It was an April Fools prank that went wrong. VERY wrong.
The Circle (2023)
- In the 1990s, a group of Black single mothers known as The Circle formed an underground gambling ring in Danville, Virginia. During the week they toiled at their day jobs. But on the weekends they gambled – and their winnings often exceeded their paychecks. That extra cash went a long way in easing the struggle of raising a family as a single mother.
Memorial to Enslaved Laborers (2022)
- Cauline Yates was at a family reunion the first time she heard she was a descendant of Thomas Jefferson. In 2019, she was asked to help develop the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers at the University of Virginia.
Inspiration4 (2022)
- Outer space probably isn’t in your travel plans this summer. But it could be soon. Last year, Hayley Arceneaux was a SpaceX crew member in the first all-civilian mission to orbit earth. Her upcoming book, Wild Ride: A Memoir of IV Drips and Rocket Ships, chronicles her unlikely journey from childhood cancer to space explorer.
Zorn Vongal (2022)
- LARP stands for Live Action Role Play. Think of it like Lord of the Rings comes to life, where you get to create your own character and wield foam swords on a mock-battlefield. But for many players, LARP is more than just fun and games – it’s a lifeline to belonging.
The Soulmasters (2022)
- Formed in the mid 1960’s, The Soulmasters was an interracial soul band from Danville, VA. Jerry Wilson and John Irby were the two African-American lead singers, and the other 8 members of the band were white. Jerry reflects on his three years in the band and what it was like touring the South during the height of segregation.
UFO Sighting (2021)
- The Pentagon’s recent UFO report investigated 144 UFO sightings across the country. And from all the sightings that were reviewed, only one UFO was actually identified. Turns out it was just a large, deflated balloon. Pretty disappointing stuff for all the true believers out there. But not everyone is disappointed.
The Johnny Appleseed of Weed (2021)
- For decades, America has treated marijuana as a criminal justice issue – locking up hundreds of thousands of people on minor possession charges. And the majority of those arrests have targeted Black, indigenous, and people of color. Advocates argue that after bearing the brunt of harsh marijuana laws, people of color deserve a spot in Virginia’s commercial cannabis industry.
